“Hand,” by Ryan Boudinot, and “Everything is Breakable with a Big Enough Stone,” by Taryn Bowe
To celebrate fwriction surpassing two hundred followers, today’s Story of the Day is actually two stories: “Hand,” by Ryan Boudinot, and “Everything is Breakable with a Big Enough Stone,” by Taryn Bowe. These stories are wildly different, particularly in voice, but I enjoy them both, quite a bit:
from “Hand”:
“The woman nursed her baby in the deepest cell of the dungeon. The space was quite large but she stayed mostly in a corner on a pile of decomposing straw, the infant close to her empty breasts, rocking, singing it pieces of songs.”
from “Everything is Breakable with a Big Enough Stone”:
“When the tape was over, Lyla opened the closet door and pressed rewind. If she could go back to any age, she would go back to being ten.”
