For me, it’s hard to follow Ray Carver. But, if any short story writer can do it, it’s Amy Hempel. This isn’t my favorite Hempel piece, but it’s certainly her most widely known. If you’ve never read Amy Hempel, begin the journey here. You won’t be sorry:
