It’s a fleeting moment but she knows it won’t work, it can’t work, and her baby will be lost, fallen to the sea floor, his brown eyes empty like his father’s. But she’s standing on firm footing and she watches her prayers flying as Minh is tossed into the air, and it’s a good throw and he’s high up there and everything else is stopped and it takes just a moment but the moment is eternal and then he’s landed, cushioned, in the arms of the man beside her. She can breathe again.
